FAQ: What an end to federal funding for public radio would mean for WYEP
Alt.Latino

The global Latinx community is evolving and growing fast. Alt.Latino is here to celebrate it and all of its nuances through music. Each episode, NPR Music's Felix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre sit down with a different living legend or rising star to discuss Latinx culture, heritage, and the shared borders of our experiences. Let the chisme begin!

  • Mexican singer/songwriter Ceci Bastida has been one of the Tijuana music scene’s best kept secrets since she was 15 years old. With her first solo album, Veo La Marea, the secret is now out of the bag. She paid us a visit and talked to us about her favorite new music.
  • On this week's show, we invite Josh Norek, VP of Nacional Records and host of WEXT's The Latin Alternative, to put together a list of essential Latin Alternative/Rock en Español songs.
  • Hear a garage-rock track from the Spanish band Kokoshca, the funky electronic cumbia of Colombia's Monareta, a great remix of Panamanian rap duo Los Rakas, Colombian singer Etelvina Maldonado (remixed by DJs Uproot Andy and Geko Jones) and more.
  • This week, the Mexican vocalist sits in with Alt.Latino to talk about her latest album and a few of her favorite new artists.
  • This week on Alt.Latino, like kids on Halloween night, our hosts consume a bundle of confections by some of our favorite artists -- and find that repackaging old genres can yield delicious treats.
  • Pack light, because on this week’s show we're covering a lot of musical ground. A Panamanian rocker honors traditional percussion, a former Menudo wows us, Dominican sisters tell us to relax -- and then we jet off to Italy to collect fantastic covers of classic songs.
  • Many of the year's most exciting new artists are Chilean. Whether it's bone-cracking rock 'n' roll, infectious pop, hair-raising folk or sick hip-hop, Chile's got it all.
  • This week, we explore the profundities of 1980s post-disco from Spain. But the groove doesn't end there: A Colombian group is taking over New York with a unique style it calls glampeta, while a Chilean MC takes us down memory lane.
  • Hear an unexpected assortment of our favorite new songs, including indigenous folk with an industrial twist, a Brazilian influenced by tango and a sweet Venezuelan punk band that really, honestly wishes you nothing but the worst in life.
  • Fall is in the air and that means two things: sweater weather and a big push by record companies to get lots of music into the hands of hungry music lovers. We're premiering some of it on the show today — a diverse selection of well-known artists and rising stars.
