FAQ: What an end to federal funding for public radio would mean for WYEP
Alt.Latino

The global Latinx community is evolving and growing fast. Alt.Latino is here to celebrate it and all of its nuances through music. Each episode, NPR Music's Felix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre sit down with a different living legend or rising star to discuss Latinx culture, heritage, and the shared borders of our experiences. Let the chisme begin!

  • A look at the new kids on the block who are shaking up the world of Latin music, plus a rock legend gets his due.
  • From a Brazilian rocker's ode to the overworked and underpaid to a Dominican female MC's story of an immigrant's toil, we spin music that honors the spirit of hard work.
  • This week on Alt.Latino, we travel throughout the Latin world to find 10 great bands that seamlessly stitch traditional Latin music with new and unexpected sounds.
  • Summer is nearly over, but still, love is in the air. So here are some songs for and about that special someone.
  • For this week's show, Alt.Latino compiles a mixtape for those with mischievous intentions. Hear from a rockera who makes the best of a situation many would find awkward, a Colombian musician who reminisces fondly about what happened last night, a Spanish singer who tries hard to forget, and more.
  • From a Colombian group whose hotness has the fire department on standby to a South American female MC making an unusually mischievous request, these six Spanish-language songs will get your heart racing in no time.
  • In this week's installment of Alt.Latino, hear a collection of outstanding cover songs, from the bizarre to the sublime. A Mexican glam-rock band wipes the tears off a sad pop tune and gives it an edge, while a Colombian singer turns a macho ballad into a feminist song -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Tired of a life without adventure, last week Alt.Latino's Jasmine Garsd and Felix Contreras packed their bags and escaped to the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York to check out some exciting bands. In this episode, they play songs by their favorite acts at LAMC 2010, from a group of shy young Mexicans who went crazy on the banjo to a zombie-like Spanish punk rocker.
  • Latin rock is no boys club: From Argentina to Mexico, women are running much of the show. In this week's episode, Andrea Echeverri, lead singer of the Colombian band Aterciopelados, shares her picks for Latina women who rock.
  • Despite differences in dialect, culture and heritage, many Latinos are united by a shared immigration experience -- either personally or through family members. In this week's edition of Alt.Latino, we review our favorite songs about immigrants.
