This week on WYEP, we look into a new indie rock song from the Kentucky musician S.G. Goodman, and the latest release from the iconic Lucy Dacus, “Bullseye.”
S.G. Goodman, “Fire Sign”
The Kentucky musician and songwriter is back with a feisty song that leans more into indie rock than Americana. It's her first release since 2022's “Teeth Marks,” which has the epic jam "Work Until I Die" on it. Goodman uses her wit to convey that this new song is about someone who finds a struggle to be a better person, and coming to answers the only person that can put the fire out is the reflection in a mirror. The full length, “Planting By The Signs,” is due out June 20, and Goodman plays Pittsburgh on Aug. 7, in support of Lord Huron.
Pulp, “Spike Island”
Jarvis Cocker got his British band to do a reunion show in 2023, and this new track is their first new single since 2013. It will mark their first album release in more than 24 years. Pulp's picked up where they left off with synths, driving guitars, and Cocker's signature vocals. It feels like an old hug from a friend, where everything feels like it's 1996 again for a few minutes. “Spike Island” was the name of a concert the beloved Brit rockers Stone Roses, put on in 1990 that gave the Pulp a huge boost.
Lucy Dacus, “Bullseye”
You can't log on to social media or read new music interviews recently without seeing Lucy Dacus opening up about her wonderful new release, “Forever Is A Feeling.” It's been exciting to follow her trajectory since her debut, while garnering new fans to her quality songwriting and perfect voice. This new album cut should raise her awareness even more as it features Irish superstar Hozier. The duet carries the theme of a couple, and what they had, all while admitting the other is the “Bullseye” they were seeking. Lucy Dacus brings her tour to the Benedum Center on Sept. 24.
