What’s Spinning: Week of April 7 — Wet Leg, Jade Bird and My Morning Jacket

New in rotation from WYEP this week: a funky single from Wet Leg's sophomore album; a song that My Morning Jacket has been working on for 20 years; and a new song on grief from Jade Bird.

Wet Leg, "Catch These Fists"

Wet Let won three Grammys and plenty of other awards for their debut album. What does this band from the Isle of Wight have in store for us? Well, fists, naturally.

A funky, bass-heavy rocker, "Catch These Fists" is the first single from the band’s sophomore album, Moisturizer, due out on July 11th. They don’t your love, they just want to fight!

Jade Bird, "Who Wants"

Born in the U.K., but now based in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Bird steps out of her usual style on this new track. It’s a song she wrote in the wake of her parents divorce and deals with loss, love and grief. Jade Bird played WYEP’s Summer Music Festival in 2024.

My Morning Jacket, "Half A Lifetime"

One thing is clear: Louisville band My Morning Jacket is constantly evolving and changing from album to album, delivering a bunch of styles and sounds. Their latest effort, "Is," has a funky energy to it featuring sharp guitars, and Jim James vocals are out in front. This new single has taken almost 20 years to complete, after a demo version of it was recorded back in the era in 2005. “It’s about doing whatever it takes to get where you need to go, instead of bailing when things get hard,” James told Louisville Public Media. “Which is funny considering that it literally took a half a lifetime to finish.”

Cat Ridgeway, "What If?"

A song about parallel realities? Cat Ridgeway has you covered.  Ridgeway takes us on an impressive ride of a trumpet, banjo, and sax mixed with indie rock and somehow comes away with a single that is both playful and profound musically and lyrically.

Music Director Kyle Smith found his way to Pittsburgh via Burlington, Vermont in 1998. Smith’s career in radio has spanned over 30 years and numerous genres, including news and sports. He found his home in the AAA format at Alternative Rev105 in Minneapolis.
