What's Spinning: Week of March 24 — Sammy Rae & The Friends, Uwade, Matt Berninger

The National lead singer, Matt Berninger is back with a new song filled with lush guitars and a bittersweet message; Sammy Rae & The Friends tell the story of Doug, a office guy who's secretly a disco dance legend; and Nigerian-born artist Uwade releases a new track with light grooves and a soulful vibe — here's what's new in rotation on WYEP this week.

Matt Berninger, “Bonnet Of Pins”

Lead singer of The National is back with a solo effort called, “Get Sunk.  “Bonnet of Pins” is the first single from the record and from the first notes, one can tell that it’s a familiar voice with that unmistakable baritone sound. Matt Berninger says that the new album was inspired by “a long period of writer’s block and self-disgust.” It’s a bittersweet track, with lush guitars, and what feels like a 50-50 mix of melancholy and excitement.

Sammy Rae & The Friends, “Cool-Doug, at Night”

“Something For Everybody” tells the story of the album’s ability to hop, skip and jump through musical genres. “Cool-Doug, at Night” is one of those character songs, but musically a flat-out disco cut that is that follows Doug, the typical office guy who’s secretly a disco dancing legend. Sammy Rae & The Friends have captured their live sets very well on their debut release. The band has been building their live shows for a few years, and have become quite the collective on the road.

Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory, “Idiot Box”

The lush, soaring vocals and swirling of the synth pianos make “Idiot Box” a best choice for the new single, from the latest effort from Sharon Van Etten. The track almost has a Kate Bush-meets-New Order-feel that makes it feel like a modern anthem.

Uwade, “Call It A Draw”

Uwade is a musician that was born in Nigeria, and grew up singing in Charlotte, N.C. Uwade’s vocals stand out with the light production, airy guitar sounds, and chill feel to what amounts to a relationship song, with light grooves and a soulful vibe. As the title suggests, it’s time to “Call It A Draw” on this particular relationship, with no space for going back to reconcile.
