What's Spinning: Week of Feb. 17 — Bon Iver, Samia & Michigander

This week, tune into WYEP for a new single from Bon Iver, "Everything is Peaceful Love," a preview to Samia's upcoming album with a track called "Bovine Excision" and a song from Michigander about dealing with anxiety, "I'll Be OK."

Bon Iver, "Everything Is Peaceful Love"

A new single from Bon Iver landed on Valentine's Day. Justin Vernon announced that "SABLE fABLE" will be released in April. “Everything Is Peaceful Love” is the portrait of a man overwhelmed with happiness upon meeting the one he will fall in love with, according to Vernon. The soulful beat and shimmering vocals are a peak into the new refined Bon Iver sound.

Samia, "Bovine Excision"

What a title to a song — and one with an interesting backstory. Samia has stated that the song is about a reference to the killing and mutilation of cattle under supposedly unusual, usually bloodless circumstances. She claims that she was drawn to the phenomenon of bloodless bovine excision as a metaphor for self extraction. Her third album "Bloodless" is due out this spring.

The Head And The Heart, "Time With My Sins"

Jonathan Russell says "Time With My Sins" is about vulnerability and hard truths that can feel scary to put out in the open.  He started the song, had trouble completing it, and after it sat around for a while, bandmate Matty Gervais picked up where Jonathan left off.  The result is a highly emotional new track that encompasses how well the band works together to create their sound. The song will appear on the band's upcoming self-produced sixth album. A title and release date will be announced soon.

Bill Deasy, "Face Down"

Veteran Pittsburgh musician Bill Deasy returns with a full album of new songs called "Work in Progress." He tapped into some new spaces for recording, and is joined locally by Shane McLaughlin from Buffalo Rose, and a name not unfamiliar to Deasy recordings in the past, Maia Sharp.  After 30 years as singer-songwriter Bill's writing is still shining and like most of us, a work in progress

Michigander, "I'll Be OK"

When Jason Singer was here late in 2024 to share the news of his first full length album, he told us that the singles and the EP's released over the past decade were like television episodes, and this first album feels like a movie version of his story.  "I'll Be OK" deals with the anxiety that started to occur while being on the road, and the subsequent panic attacks that began to occur.  The song is a journey of dealing with anxiety, getting assistance, and putting in the work to overcome it.

Justice and Tame Impala, "Neverender"

French electronic music duo Justice and Australian indie act Tame Impala teamed up for this dance floor topper of 2024.  The disco-infused track builds and soars to big heights and features vocals from Kevin Parker from Tame Impala.  "Neverender" ended up winning a Grammy for best dance/electronic recording at this year's 67th annual Grammy Awards
