Pittsburgh Artist of the Week: ORANGE MUSIC

ORANGE MUSIC returned this year with another timely love song for Valentine’s Day. “Only One” is smooth and sensual — a trademark of singer and bandleader Isaiah Small.

Isaiah recently spoke with WYEP’s Joey Spehar.

How do you describe your sound?

ORANGE MUSIC is colorful music... These are HUES from the HEART.

Listeners may remember that you put out another great love song around this time last year, so tell us what draws you to the romantic side of music?

Expressing emotions through song is my most comfortable way of communicating love.

What's your all-time favorite love song? If you can't pick one, what's your go-to song you throw on when you want to get someone's attention?

My all-time favorite love song is Prototype by OUTKAST! The beautiful major seventh chords give me goosebumps.

Any cool stories about making “Only One?”

“Only One” was co-produced with Cyzon Griffin, drummer from Moonhooch. ORANGE MUSIC opened for Moonhooch at Mr. Smalls twice in 2022. Cyzon joined us on stage, and we performed with two drum sets at the same time. It was magical! Moonhooch will return to Mr. Smalls on April 11 this year.

“Only One” was mastered by Spencer McNeill, saxophonist of ORANGE MUSIC. He operates The Green Room, a state-of-the-art studio here in Pittsburgh.

Who are some other Pittsburgh artists you think more people should listen to?

Jack Swing

Joey Spehar is a Pittsburgh native who started as a volunteer D.J. at WYEP, fresh out of college in 2006. He took on any job they’d let him do like editing audio, engineering remote broadcasts, and shoveling snow.
