WYEP's Pittsburgh Artist of the Year: Merce Lemon

Merce Lemon poses in a tank top.

Merce Lemon has long been a staple of the Pittsburgh DIY scene, but with the release of her latest album, she may be singing from bigger stages soon. “Let Me Drive Them Dogs Wild” is the kind of album you find yourself getting lost in. Maybe you’ll catch yourself rewinding a couple seconds to hear a little better what she just sang or maybe you’ll just turn it up loud and let her band’s playing wash over you completely.

"Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild" is a masterpiece of rustic, rust-belt country that feels cool, but with an authenticity and unfeigned sense of identity. These songs are entirely Merce Lemon. However, it cannot be overstated how important her band is to these songs as they confidently build musical worlds that evoke profound senses of not only loss but love and hope.

Spend some time with Merce Lemon’s new album this winter. While you may find that it forces you to confront your own inner struggles, you’ll feel good about doing the work.
