Pittsburgh Artist of the Week: Grand Piano

Pittsburgh psych rock band Grand Piano are calling it quits! The group, fronted by enigmatic singer and guitarist Zak Kane, will leave us with a mind-bendingly uninhibited final album, "Information Superhigh."

Zak recently spoke with WYEP’s Joey Spehar.

Tell us more about the song “Information Superhigh.” What inspired you to write it and what does it mean to you?

“Information Superhigh” came quickly and really out of nowhere. When it was time to write words, I could only picture a cartoon grim reefer driving a convertible through the desert smoking. As a result, it's kinda about humans wrecking the planet.

What was the first album that really changed your life?

The first album that changed my life is kinda hard to pin down. Black Sabbath was a big one, but so was Green Jellö before they changed their name and so was "White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean" by NOFX.

Who are some other Pittsburgh artists you think more people should be listening to?

The Pittsburgh music scene has many great talents, and I would recommend any that you've never heard of. Chances are it will be a good experience.

Any other super interesting things about you we should know?

Zak has never stuck a sticker, and Tom makes new Nintendo games. Boop is actually a doctor, and Wes does actually carry a piece of wood to stand on. Nick is somehow left and right-handed when playing the drums.

Grand Piano's final concert takes place Saturday, November 30th at Spirit.

Grand Piano are:

Zak Kane – Guitar & Vocal
Ryan Booth – Saxophone
Nick DeAngelo – Drum
Wes Conroy – Bass
Thomas Cipollone – Guitar

Joey Spehar is a Pittsburgh native who started as a volunteer D.J. at WYEP, fresh out of college in 2006. He took on any job they’d let him do like editing audio, engineering remote broadcasts, and shoveling snow.
