We have five new, excellent tracks entering rotation this week at WYEP. From the blues- folk-and soul of Valerie June to long time jam band ALO, and a new era for The Black Keys — here are new songs you can discover this week.
Valerie June, “Joy, Joy!”
What perfect timing for a new song from Valerie June. “Joy, Joy!” moves across genres and has an old-school feel and bounce to it. She’s reaching down and asking everyone to find that joy. Valerie believes joy is a practice, an action, and will makes us all stronger giving us the ability to bounce back from adversity. Her new album, “Owls, Omens, and Oracles,” out April 11.
ALO, “Blank Canvas”
ALO have stuck together as a band that serves up an interesting combo of rock, electronic, folk and funk with witty lyrics. ‘Blank Canvas’ urges listeners to leave cynicism behind and reach for optimism. Their new album, “Frames” is due out, April 4.
The Black Keys, “The Night Before”
With multiple Grammy awards and modern rock and blues anthems for two decades, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney return with an edgy, not-so-typical, almost Beck-influenced new cut. “The Night Before” is filled with synths, layered production, and a move away from the typical Black Keys track. Their latest album, “No Rain No Flowers” will be out later this year.
Charley Crockett, “Lonesome Drifter”
The prolific country musician from Texas was in our studios last year and mentioned that he’s always writing and creating material. He let us know at that time that he’d already completed two new records for release. We follow Charley, as the “Lonesome Drifter” through a western tale of highways, and encountering shady and powerful people. His new album arrives March 14.
Momma, "I Want You (Fever)"
The grunge pop outfit are back with their catchiest rocker so far. It’s reminiscent of 90’s alt-rock and pop era of Veruca Salt and Breeders. The band appears focused on songwriting, and “I Want You (Fever)” dives into the subject matter of wanting to be with someone who’s already attached or isn’t over their ex. “Welcome To My Blue Sky” is out April 4.
