What’s Spinning: Week of Feb. 3 — Clover County, Perfume Genius & Craig Finn

Check out the catchy indie pop vibes of Clover Country’s “Ultraviolet,” jam along to a new cinematic song by Lord Huron, “Who’s Laugh’s Last?” or enjoy Perfume Genius’ “It’s A Mirror” here’s what’s new in rotation on WYEP.

Clover County, “Ultraviolet”

Clover County has moved around the country a lot developing her following, but her stage name is an ode to all the places she’s called home. “Ultraviolet” is a catchy indie pop track sonically, with a foot in the past and one in the present. The upbeat nature of the song has an underlying intensity dealing with mental health issues.

Craig Finn, “People Of Substance”

‘People of Substance’ is the new song just out from Craig Finn. He balances his musical life between his band The Hold Steady and his solo work. This shiny new cut has a different feel to it from the work of Adam Granduciel of the War on Drugs, who plays on and produces the forthcoming album, “Always Been,” due out in April.

Lord Huron, “Who Laugh's Last?”

This L.A. indie rock band is back with “Who Laugh's Last?”  The cinematic new song features actress Kristen Stewart in her recording debut, doing a spoken word introduction that carries the first part of this track, that grows better with each listen. The video itself feels almost like a movie trailer to an upcoming haunted thriller of a movie.

Maribou State, “All I Need”

Andreya Triana lends her vocals to this new soulful bouncy electronic cut that feels sprawling, organic, and layered at the same time. The many elements reminded me of Moby, “Play” era material, this is comparable with a somewhat softer and soulful touch.

Perfume Genius, “It's A Mirror”

“It's A Mirror” takes Mike Hadreas’s Perfume Genius down a stretch of a lost road with a sonic directional switch from past releases. The song is personal, tackling mental health issues, aging, and how these things affect him on a daily basis. While the song deals with dark subject matter, the song itself provides some optimism with its ending.
