Pittsburgh Artist of the Week: Dream The Heavy

Love is sweet. It fills us up and inspires us to be the best versions of ourselves. But love is also sad at times and Dream The Heavy capture love’s occasional melancholy vibe on their new song “Candy.”

Paul Dean Price III from Dream The Heavy recently spoke with WYEP's Joey Spehar.

Casey Henderlong

What’s your musical history up to this point?

Weve been a band for close to two and a half years. In that time, we've recorded a Live EP at the Pittsburgh institution Club Cafe. We released our first full length record in April titled "Into the Unknown " that was recorded, produced, and mixed by Bengt Alexander. He is a very well-known person in our scene for the bands Action Camp, St. Dude, as well as the sound person who tells it like it is but makes you sound the best.

How do you describe your sound?

We’re rooted in Alternative Rock influence but consider ourselves genre fluid. We have musicians in this band from all sorts of different beginnings and influences, which allows every song to stand on its own rather than fit nicely into a box. We are equal parts Prog/Post/Funk/Alternative/and Bowie.

Tell us more about the song "Candy." What inspired you to write it and what does it mean to you?

We formed the foundation of “Candy” on our first rehearsal. It's one of those songs that just stuck and made it to the album. Bengt had a big influence on TK and really encouraged and allowed him to step out from what a typical love song is and gave it the melancholy vibe we absolutely adore. Hope you all do, too! It has our Post Punk and New Wave inspiration all over it while still retaining the loveable sweetness it originated from.

What was the first album that really changed your life?

I speak for myself on this and do not hold the rest of the band accountable. Faith No More's "The Real Thing." It hit as I was discovering musicianship and just floored me and still does to this day.

Who are some other Pittsburgh artists you think more people should listen to?

There are so many great acts! Abstract Theory, Animal Scream, 3 Leagues to Rome, Old Game, Old Neon, Normal Creatures, Tony from Bowling, Zinnias Garden, Dichro, Sunny Daze and the Weathermen, Hemlock for Socrates, The Sneaky Heat Missiles, and Paging Doctor Moon to name a very short few.

I urge everyone to go see live music. Every day there's a band in our scene playing that will blow your mind!

Any other super interesting things about you we should know?

We are throwing the second annual Winter Wonder Ball at Spirit this year on Dec. 21 with Abstract Theory, Animal Scream, and Zinnia's Garden. It's a local showcase with PGH artists with artisanal vendors, prom pics, and general good vibes. It's a great way to celebrate our scene as well as the Solstice. Last year we had over 200 people show! We're hoping to see you all there! Sept. 21 we're headlining the Funhouse with Funky Lamp and Chip and the Charge Ups. Come out!
