The first few months of every year are always an exciting time for music fans. Especially during winter, when I spend a lot more time indoors at home listening with more of a critical ear. Here are three to add to your list that will be out soon.
Father John Misty “Chloë and the Next 20th Century”
April 18
It’s been four years since Josh Tillman has released a full-length album as Father John Misty. It’s quite a stretch for a prolific writer that put out three efforts over the course of the previous four years. The new single, “Funny Girl,” has a cinematic vibe, with lush arrangements with strings, some brass, and woodwinds. There’s also a cut on the release that is spot-on vintage Glen Campbell.

Hurray For The Riff Raff “Life On Earth“

Over the years, Alynda Segarra has skated in the genres of folk, roots, and Americana — to rock and punk. “Life On Earth” is another move in both sound and direction with a dive into synth-rock and indie alt-pop. There’s some heartbreak and trauma involved here, especially on the lead single, “Pierced Arrows,” which features Segarra starting off with the line, “Trying to avoid running into my ex on broadway,” lending to the idea that running from the past usually catches up with you.

The Dip “Sticking With It”
March 4
The seven-piece band from Seattle got its start by playing backyard BBQs and parties, and truly have a grassroots build to its rise. We discovered The Dip based on the 2019 single “Sure Don’t Miss You.” The band was passing through town on tour and visited WYEP in for a very special Live & Direct session that had listeners dancing at the Community Broadcast Center. The Dip’s vintage rhythm and blues sound, and classic songwriting make the forthcoming release one to look forward to in 2022.
