Pittsburgh Artist of the Week: Jack Swing

Isaiah Ross started Jack Swing when he was in a low place and needed music to save him.

“And it really did,” he said. “I know what it feels like for music to be the thing to inspire you to start working towards getting out of that.”

The Pittsburgh band started in 2016 as a thrashier sounding, garage rock band. And if you’ve been following along, you’ve probably noticed a slow evolution to their sound.

“The more you play with people and the more comfortable you get with them, you really develop your own unique style and learn how to expand upon that,” Ross said. “It’s less of us looking at it like an intentional evolution, and more just a natural progression of things.”

Ross fronts the band with a cool confidence that can be pretty inspiring. That’s something the band has aimed for since the beginning and it pushes its way to the forefront on their new song “Whether I Do.”

“’Whether I Do,’ like a lot of our songs, comes from a place of trying to find inspiration within yourself to step up and be the person you need to be,” Ross said. “I think that’s a really constant theme in a lot of our music; that theme of finding that fire within yourself to step up to the plate.

Joey Spehar is a Pittsburgh native who started as a volunteer D.J. at WYEP, fresh out of college in 2006. He took on any job they’d let him do like editing audio, engineering remote broadcasts, and shoveling snow.
