What is a hellbender?

Of all the creatures that call the Earth home, few are as strange and fascinating as the Eastern Hellbender salamander. Also known as the ‘devil dog’ or ‘snot otter’, Pennsylvania’s state amphibian can grow to over two feet in length, making it one of the largest salamanders in the world. Hellbenders are nocturnal predators that prefer cold, clear, swift-running rivers and streams where they hunt for crayfish and other small aquatic animals.
