Internships


WYEP offers a number of unpaid, for-credit internships each semester for full-time students looking to go behind the scenes at a major public radio station.



Application Deadlines: For the summer program, applications must be postmarked by February 15; for the fall program, applications must be postmarked by July 15; and for the winter/spring program, applications must be postmarked by November 15.

Music and Programming

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, seeks a Music and Programming intern for our radio programming department.
Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit unpaid position include:

  • Training on WYEP Master Control broadcast equipment, including Master Control on-air board, ENCO, Adobe Audition, CD players, DAT machine, VCR, phone unit, and microphone use.
  • Maintaining and cataloging WYEP Music Library
  • Study how a daily ‘Mix’ radio program is produced at WYEP
  • Assist in producing Weekday Mix shows; finding information for on-air use
  • Maintenance of databases for Mix features; archiving audio of in-studio performances
  • Learning about WYEP programming philosophies, mission and audience development
  • Administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on- and off-site; database entry, music cataloging, phone reception, etc.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities related to the operations of WYEP


Broadcast and Audio Production

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, seeks a Broadcast and Audio Production intern to assist our radio programming and production department.
Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit unpaid position include:

  • Learn and practice audio editing with Adobe Audition
  • Learn and prepare content with Digital Audio Delivery System
  • Assist with creation and production of promotional spots and special programming
  • Edit and prepare network programming for on-air purposes
  • Administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on- and off-site; database entry, music cataloging, phone reception, etc.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities related to the operations of WYEP


Marketing and Promotions

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, is looking for interns to assist our Marketing and Promotions department.
Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit unpaid position include:

  • Assisting Marketing Director in the production and promotion of WYEP events (may include some evening and weekend hours)
  • Writing copy for on-air features such as Weekend Outlook
  • Research and report on WYEP-related artists and information
  • Maintaining online concert calendar and arts/events listings
  • Assisting Underwriting Representative as needed
  • Administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on- and off-site; database entry, music cataloging, phone reception, etc.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities related to the operations of WYEP


Graphic Design

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, is looking for a Graphic Design intern to expand our web development team. Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit unpaid position include working independently within a very small team assisting Director of Interactive and Print Media with graphics for web and print. The ideal candidate will be interested in creating graphics that expand WYEP’s brand. This includes ads for newspaper and brochures, membership collateral and WYEP’s web site. Additional duties and responsibilities related to the operations of WYEP may include administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on- and off-site; database entry, music cataloging, phone reception, etc.

Qualifications: Music lover. Interested in discovering creative solutions to technical challenges. Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustratrator & Indesign as well as Macromedia Dreamweaver. Working knowledge of HTML.

Journalism/Reporting—The Allegheny Front

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, is looking for a Journalism and Reporting intern to assist The Allegheny Front, WYEP’s weekly environmental radio program that explore issues relevant to the lives of those who live in the region.
Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit, unpaid position include:

  • Engineering and producing interviews in-house and out in the field
  • Creating story and content ideas; research and writing -Working with individual reporters
  • Learning to edit audio content on station equipment
  • Field recording assistance
  • Administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on- and off-site; database entry, music cataloging, phone reception, etc.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities related to the operations of WYEP


Production/Audio Content ­ The Allegheny Front

91.3fm WYEP, an independent, eclectic, community-based public radio music station in Pittsburgh, is looking for a Production and Audio Content intern to assist The Allegheny Front, WYEP’s weekly environmental radio program that explore issues relevant to the lives of those who live in the region.
Duties and responsibilities for this for-credit, unpaid position include:

  • Training and full-scale production work on audio editing equipment

  • Website updating
