The 9:13 Buzz with Sarah Wardrop
Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York!
In case you missed, it here’s what she played:
Alex Lahey, "Wes Anderson" - Out of Melbourne, Australia, Alex Lahey just started her first U.S. tour, including SXSW this week, and it follows the U.S. release of her debut EP B-Grade University. While I doubt it's because she's from Melbourne that her songwriting reminds me of Courtney Barnett's, there is a similar way with words and a gift for setting scenes. Lahey studied saxophone and played in concert bands in her past and I think that experience brings an ear for arrangements, which propel this song forward.
Tennis, "My Emotions Are Blinding" - The married duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley made their debut album as Tennis on a sailing trip, and they returned to ocean living for album number four, Yours Conditionally, which just came out last Friday. The setting adds a breezy, fluid and vintage pop sound to this song in particular, but there's also an interesting combination of feeling relaxed and isolated at the same time.
