Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Justin Jacobs

In case you missed it, here's what Justin played (commentary by JJ):

Eli "Paperboy" Reed, "Cut Ya Down" - This Boston dude just never disappoints when it comes to a good groove. Reed is one of the most convincing modern soul singers, with an impassioned howl and an effortlessly funky band to back him up. His latest album, My Way Home, is packed with down and dirty, old school soul music that'll get you moving even more than Pokemon Go. The first single is "Cut Ya Down," with its chorus taken from a classic gospel song. If it sounds familiar, though, you may have Moby to thank - he used the same sample for "Run On" from his mega-hit album Play.

Blind Pilot, "Umpqua Rushing" - The field of acoustic pop is a crowded one, especially since that Ed Sheeran fellow got to town, so it takes something special to stand out. Thankfully, Blind Pilot have what it takes. The band create beautifully catchy, heartfelt folk-pop that feels equally ethereal and totally human. Their latest album, And Then Like Lions, is out soon and is well worth the hour or so of your life.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York!

In case you missed, it here’s what she played:

Michael Kiwanuka, "The Final Frame" - After a four-year wait, Michael Kiwanuka's sophomore album Love and Hate continues the innately soulful sounds of his debut album, but with some remarkable growth. There's an added cinematic feel, thanks in part to the production work of Danger Mouse, and Kiwanuka also steps out in the roles of guitarist and bandleader, making this closing track sear and ache.

The Julie Ruin, "I'm Done" - Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame is back with the second album by her latest band The Julie Ruin, called Hit Reset. This defining punk voice tears through yet another great pop song, mixing attitude, a defiant melancholy and plenty of bounce.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh’s finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Scott Tady!

In case you missed it here’s what he played with commentary by Scott:

Dan Bubien, "Grinding These Gears"The Beaver County blues-rocker's lively title track from a September release includes a sax solo from Eddie Manion (Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball Tour"/Joe Grushecky.) If you dig Grushecky's Houserockers you'll appreciate Bubien's band and this song about movin' on. Bubien's a tasteful guitar player. The nice piano touches here are courtesy of Joe Munroe, from the WQED-TV American Soundtrack house band.

Butch Walker, "Descending" That's alt-country heroine Ashley Monroe providing the counter-vocals to Walker in this ballad about a relationship that's in limbo, leaning towards dissipation. ("We're not falling; we're not flying; we're somewhere in between...") "I just want you to worry about me some times," sings Walker, the acclaimed rootsy rocker whose credits as a producer range from Taylor Swift to Frank Turner and Avril Lavigne to Dashboard Confessional.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Patrick Bowman!

In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played:

The Avalanches, “Colours” - The Avalanches’ return with their long-awaited new album Wildflower (out July 8), long awaited being 16 years since their classic Since I Left You dropped, drawing a straight line from the Dust Brothers production on Pauls’ Boutique and Beck’s Odelay, To DJ Shadow to Girl Talk. The album had over 3,000 discrete record samples. “Colours” is just a swirling miasma of good vibes and record scratches and straight up weirdness.

Maxwell, 1990x"1990x" is off of BlackSUMMERS'night the upcoming fifth studio album by Maxwell. It is set to be released on July 1, 2016. It is the first album that Maxwell has released in nearly seven years. The r&b lothario is mostly known for his mid 90s albums Embra and Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, and has arrive back with this just languorous with really thick strings a  little off kilter vibe...with 90s R&B/neo soul sound which was really come back around.
