Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Justin Jacobs!

In case you missed it here’s what he played with commentary by Justin!

Albert Hammond Jr., "Born Slippy" - Oh lord, why can't The Strokes be this much fun anymore? This is the lead track on (Strokes guitarist) Albert Hammond Jr.'s latest solo album, Momentary Masters, and it's four minutes of pinging guitars, catchy melodies and danceable drums. With Strokes singer Julian Casablancas also releasing quality solo material, maybe this is a sign that the whole is no longer better than the sum of the parts? Either way, you'll love "Born Slippy."

Deradoorian, "A Beautiful Woman" - Angel Deradoorian has played in the Dirty Projectors and with members of Animal Collective. But on her solo album, The Expanding Flower Planet, she's her own woman. This track is a gorgeous, psychedelic, vaguely Middle Eastern-sounding jam packed with weird effects and layered vocals.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York!

In case you missed, it here’s what she played:

John Grant, "Disappointing" - This American songwriter based in Iceland is set to release Grey Tickles, Black Pressure in October. It's a follow-up to his 2013 album Pale Green Ghosts, which showcased Grant's artful eccentricity and dark humor cabaret. Those songs also explored beats, and he takes that sound even further on this new song, which features vocals by Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl.

Nathaniel Rateliff, "I Need Never Get Old" - I first heard Rateliff in 2012 with his song "Whimper and Wail," and there was a ragged edge to his voice but the delivery was slightly halted. Now he's not holding anything back, belting and preaching soul songs with roots, joined by his band The Night Sweats. This track opens the self-titled album, which very appropriately has a home on the Stax label.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Jess Phaneuf from MVY Radio on Martha's Vineyard!

In case you missed, it here’s what she played:

Family Of The Year, "Give A Little" - Not straying too far from the sound on their recent hit "Hero", Family Of The Year have another sweet sounding single out. It's just one track off their forthcoming self-titled album, which drops on 9/4.

Josh Ritter, "Getting Ready To Get Down" - Josh Ritter has fun with this new song, which has a ton of lyrics in each verse, and they're almost spoken rather than sung. I think Josh Ritter songs like these are the Ritter I like best - with a light hearted, catchy feel to them.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh’s finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Scott Tady!

In case you missed it here’s what he played with commentary by Scott:

Delta Saints, "Bones" - Swampy, bluesy, rootsy rock from a Nashville band that cites My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and the Black Keys as influences. This is the title track (chorus: "Be the wind, not the willow") to their solid album that comes out this Friday.

Silverbird, "Lyfe" - Starts with a indie-rock shuffle & jangle, before some reverb-y guitar and then a blissfully simple verse: "I want to love you forever/I want to be your best friend/I want to lay with you in a garden..." Halfway through, though, the song kind of peters out dreamily ... leaving you to wonder is it over? Nope, this NYC band comes crashing back again at full speed. The singer is Tim Barr from Lana Del Ray's band, so you can expect a little drama and trippyness. Their debut album comes out in September, and I hope it offers a lot more of this.
