Live and Direct with Morgan Erina

Pittsburgh singer-songwriter, Morgan Erina, performs in the WYEP Studios on May 13th, 2016 to promote her new EP Lady. Born and raised in New York City, Erina was one half of the local folk group, Broken Fences (along with Guy Russo). This EP, recorded at the Pittsburgh studio Treelady, marks her return to recording solo music and was funded with a campaign on Indie-GoGo. Erina describes the process of crowd-funding "Overwhelming! You just want to promise everyone that you can do this and you're worried that you can't. But I did it!". The songs on Lady are dedicated to Erina's mother, who encouraged her music growing up: "She never played music, but I remember she used to sing all the time while washing the dishes... she influenced me. I don't know if it's because she didn't get to do stuff as a child and wanted us to have the best life. She signed me up for piano lessons and very much encouraged me to do what I wanted to do in this area."

When it comes to being "boxed-in" as a quiet and moody songwriter and performer, Erina feels like this is true to a certain extent, but don't underestimate her versatility. "Lately, I've been getting louder! I have more freedom to do what I want... There's talks of me possibly joining a metal-ish band in the future, which should be interesting. I think I'd lke to get louder, like Alanis Morissette."
