Son Volt "Notes Of Blue"

Jay Farrar has been the leader of the Alternative Country act Son Volt for over 20 years.  Since the well know split of Uncle Tupelo in 1994, Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco and Jay Farrar formed Son Volt .  The eighth studio effort from Son Volt is an expansion and continuation of Jay Farrar’s vision to carry on traditional, rootsy, and soulful music.

With an album title like, “Notes of Blue”, one would think it’s an ode to the Blues or a Blues record.  It has some elements of the Delta Blues running throughout, but despite the record’s title it’s a classic Son Volt record. It’s complete with a couple traditional folk sounding Son Volt songs opening of the album, leading one to believe it’s going to be one of those mid to late 90’s records, but those two tracks followed by some of the most rocking material the band has recorded since the early single “Drown”.

“Back Against The Wall” and “Promise the World” are vintage Son Volt Songs, but “Static” and “Cherokee St” prove that Son Volt have a lot of ideas left as to where to go with traditional music.
