Josh Ritter "Sermon on the Rocks"

With a slew of literary and biblical references, and a sly sense of humor, Josh Ritter is turning into a musical version of Mark Twain. Like the bard, his vison can be satirical, entertaining, or disturbing. Like Twain, he reserves his most withering sarcasm for religious zealotry. Sermon on the Rocks is fueled by messianic fervor, startling apocalyptic imagery, and catchy melodies rooted in folk, blues, country, and R&B. Ritter is a prodigious lyricist, whose words tumble out of him rapid-fire, often shifting unpredictably in mood. At other times his pace slows as he meticulously metes out emotional information.
