Album of the Week

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, "The Soul Of A Woman" (Daptone)

We lost Sharon Jones a little over a year ago, after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.  Her final album was recorded with her backing band, The Dap Kings, in-between radiation and chemo treatments.  Her final studio album is not about her battle with cancer or facing death, but is an album that’s filled with heart and soul.

Hearing Sharon belt out the lines on the first single titled, Matter of Time, in which she’s yearning for seeing the time for equality, peace, and freedom with her short time left, spotlights her strengths.  Most of the tracks on the final studio album are upbeat, classic soul tracks that cover the gamut on topics of romance, politics, and the state of the nation.

Jones’s voice is as strong on, The Soul Of A Woman, as it was throughout her impactful, but short career. This final studio effort solidifies Sharon Jones place as a Modern Soul Icon.
